Extra effort makes it all seem worthwhile

By Melody Gordon , Treadwell High School

Everyone always has great hopes for their senior year. I entered Treadwell High School last August thinking everything would get easier. I would have effortlessly good grades, a picturesque senior trip, an abbreviated schedule and a classic case of senioritis. I could have had it easy, but I could not allow myself to settle.

Life is much sweeter when you earn your keep. I could have slacked off. I could have breezed through classes with a C average after the college acceptance letters started rolling in and I’d mapped out my plans for the next four years. Yet, because I aimed a little bit higher and worked a little bit harder, I can truly say that I have no regrets and no real worries about my future. Call me a nerd, but I’m glad I ran the extra mile. Someday my checkbook will be glad I ran the extra mile, too.

The effort I put into my years of education is unparalleled. Although I’m heading to college this fall to do it all over again for another four years at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where I plan to major in journalism, I won’t forget the 12th grade and the hard work I put in to get where I want to go in life.

The saying, “Anything worth having is worth working for” is true. And it’s what I want to pass down to every underclassman and to all the overachievers.
