Not giving up is half the battle

By Robert Melvin , Wooddale High School

Don’t quit. This is probably the most-recited advice I get from everyone around me. No matter what obstacles I have faced, it has been the same—don’t quit. By the grace of God, I am fortunate enough to say that I haven’t quit.

After being accepted to The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, I thought I could take a break. But being accepted is only half of what it takes to go to college. I had to find some way to pay for my education. I was blessed to receive scholarships and financial aid so I won’t have to pay for anything.

Before the beginning of 2006, I really didn’t think much about leaving my friends and family behind because that date seemed so far off. Now that I will be graduated soon from Wooddale High School, the reality has started to set in. These are some of my last days in Memphis. I will soon have to leave this behind and begin anew somewhere else.

I used to be nervous, but my support has kept me focused. My support is every positive influence around me.

I thank everyone starting with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, without whom I would not be here. Next, I thank my mom and dad who have always been there for me. I thank my entire extended family, which has always been my strong back-up, my close friends who I consider to be like family and everyone else who gave me an opportunity to move forward.

Finally, I would like to thank The Teen Appeal for helping me to figure out what I really want to do for a career.

This is the final chapter of my childhood book, but I am about to begin a new chapter in adulthood.
