It can be a dog’s life in summer

By Folasade Omogun , Middle College High School

Summer is almost here and caring for pets in the heat can be nerve-wracking. During this sizzling season, pets need extra attention to keep them healthy. Often, summer is the most difficult season for teens to care for their pets because of busy schedules and vacations.

Dr. Lauren Olavessen is a veterinarian at Eastgate Animal clinic on Park Avenue. Recently, Olavessen, who said her love for animals and desire to help animals in need inspired her to become a veterinarian, offered some tips on caring for pets this summer.

The first step in assuring pets stay healthy, according to Olavessen, is to make sure they have all their current vaccinations. This will keep pets free from diseases such as Rabies and Parvo, which are more common in hot weather.

The next important step in taking care of your animal in the hot summer weather is to be sure to purchase flea and tick control to keep these insects away. These bugs can cause diseases and other problems for your pet. For pets that stay outside, be sure there is also a well-shaded area away from the sun where they can rest and stay cool.

The last tip Olavessen shared is to be sure pets have plenty of fresh water available to them at all times. She said water is vital during the hot summers. For older pets, it’s also important to pay close attention to them when the temperature soars because the heat will affect them the most.

For teens who need help caring for their pets, there are several places to get the necessary vaccinations for free or at a reduced cost. The Memphis and Shelby County Humane Society on 2238 Central Ave. is one place that offers help. You can also volunteer to help care for animals at the Humane Society.

Olavessen said caring for pets in the summer can be done with a little extra work. For teens who don’t want the responsibility, there are always stuffed animals or Nintendo DS’s Nintendogs.
