By Ashleigh Taylor , White Station High School

When the school doors close for the summer, many students are afraid they will be stuck with boredom as their unlikely summer friend. Never to fear, fun times are near. Memphis has many attractions to match anyone’s interests, despite the summer heat.

For starters, summer actually heats up in Memphis with the Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival. This year’s festival will be held May 5-7 and will feature acts such as B.B. King, Three Six Mafia, Al Kapone with the Bo Keys, Puddle of Mudd, Train and many others. You can check out the rest of the music line-up at http://www.memphisinmay.org/. Advance ticket prices range from $20 for a single day ticket to $49.50 for a three-day pass. After April 30th, the prices go up. This year’s Memphis in May festivities honor Costa Rica.

The music continues as music lovers can check out rapper TI on May 14 at the Premier Night Club. For the more conservative crowd, Opera Memphis will host the 50th Annual Anniversary Gala Concert May 18-20 at the Cannon Center.

Diversity and culture thrive in Memphis, especially during the summer months. Our Big Fat Greek Festival will be May 12-13 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on Highland. On June 16-18, celebrate African-American history and culture at the 13th Annual Juneteenth Freedom and Heritage Festival. The festivities will be in Douglass Park and will feature live music, food, games and family entertainment to celebrate the ending of slavery in 1865.

July 4 marks the Beale Street Independence Day Celebration in Tom Lee Park. This event is always an exciting family event, with fireworks, food and fun.

If you’re looking for something sporty to do, don’t forget about the Memphis Redbirds. The team has plenty of home games scheduled all summer, and they’ll take on teams such as the Nashville Sounds, the Iowa Cubs and the New Orleans Zephyrs. You can check out their schedule on www.memphisredbirds.com.

Then, of course, there are always attractions such as the Pink Palace Museum and the Memphis Zoo. Find some time to go and beat the heat with the polar bears.
